Team Laeth
Dinner in Memphis: Team Laeth served our first weekly meal for the homeless in downtown Memphis on Thursday Jan 10, 2013. We served 50 meals. We have served hot hearty meals EVERY Thursday since then except Thanksgiving when many others serve meals. Through the end of 2017 we served over 30,000 meals. We currently serve 70-120 people each week. We serve every Thursday at 6pm CT at First United Methodist Church 204 N. Poplar, Memphis TN. Thanks to the awesome generosity of First United Methodist Church we are able to prepare meals in their kitchen. Those available start meeting in the kitchen at 3pm CT.
Thanks to volunteers from Jacob's Well, who come out to support Team Laeth, we are also able to pass out contact information for people on the streets to get all types of assistance. We currently provide info about shelters, clothing and meals available in the downtown Memphis area to our friends on the streets along with a great meal each week. Thanks to donations from Helping People God's Way Thrift Store we are able to pass out blankets, coats and socks. They are greatly appreciated by those in need.
We have moved up from serving bagged meals out of tubs on the sidewalk to serving hot meals and eating on picnic tables along with providing information about food, shelter and assistance. God is Great !!!
Our meals consist of items such as meatloaf, spaghetti and meat sauce, chili, soups, fruits, vegetables, and salads. We have been consistently showing up every Thursday despite the weather so we now have a group of about 50-70 waiting for us each week. We are a diverse group which includes many currently and recently homeless individuals. Everyone is welcome to volunteer and everyone has something to offer. If time or location is a problem please consider donating supplies. We can always use donations of paper products, non-perishable items, vegetables, fruits, sweet snacks, drinks, personal care items, bug spray or anything else that would benefit our friends on the streets.
Team Laeth also supports Jacob's Well Church each month. Jacob's Well gathers homeless and hungry people from all over Memphis for their weekly church service and meal. Team Laeth manages the kitchen on the 2nd Saturday of each month. We arrive at the church at 602 Looney Ave Memphis TN at 4:30pm CT to prepare the food that is served before the weekly church service. We can always use help preparing and serving the meal.
Team Laeth also supports Jacob's Well's CPR (Compassionate Party on the Road) meal preparation and distribution. CPR prepares over 100 meals each week and distributes them to homeless people in downtown Memphis and other areas where homeless people gather. We take the meals under the bridges and to the alleys and park benches where homeless people stay. It is very rewarding. They can use help preparing the meals and distributing them. Volunteers meet at Jacob's Well Church at 602 Looney, Memphis TN about 4:30pm CT Wednesdays.
Please consider joining us, there is nothing like the feeling of helping others in need. Please let us know in advance if you plan to volunteer.
A very special "Thanks" to First United Methodist Church for giving us a place to serve, the kitchen to prepare the meals, and providing bread and pastries each week. We greatly appreciate their support. We would not be able to help as many people as we do without their awesome support. They offer us things we didn't even know we could ask for. The church is currently rebuilding their sanctuary that burned down in 2006. We have moved from the concrete slab that used to be the sanctuary and will be the new sanctuary to the alley next to the church. The church has blocked off the alley and gotten the city of Memphis to rezone it so we can serve our meals there. The church rebuilding fund does not include alley improvements. We would like to have gates at each end and an awning to protect us from the sun and rain. If anyone is able to contribute to help with those improvements it would be greatly appreciated. No contribution is too small and they will be used for our alley. Please contact First United Methodist Church of Memphis and note the donations are for the Team Laeth alley. Donations are tax deductible and will be appreciated by the church, Team Laeth, those serving meals, and those in need receiving the meals.
Thanks also to Christ United Methodist Church for donating food, and for their volunteers that have shown up to help, and to Laeth's friends who have donated items and their time for the cause.
If you can provide any supplies, help prepare, or help serve for any of the Team Laeth activities please contact us at: Thank You.
